Alfter the Soviet Union's breakup Ukraine became independent and they waited until 2012 to participate at a final tournament of the European Championship. In 2012 Ukraine together with Poland organised the final tournament so they were automatically qualified.

Ukraine left the competition right after the group stage, after finishing third in their group behind England and France. They won their first game against Sweden 2-1 then they lost to England in a spectacular game that finished 3-2 and they also lost to France 2-0.
