Brief History at the Euros
The first time Turkey have qualified to a final tournament of the European Championship was in 1996, they were placed in a group with Portugal, Croatia and Denmark. After losing all three games Turkey finished bottom of their group and were eliminated from the competition.
In 2000 the Euros were held in Belgium and Netherlands, Turkey finished second in their group with Italy, Belgium and Sweden, advancing to the knockout stage of the competition. In the quarter-final they played against Portugal and the game finished 2-0 for Portugal and Turkey was elminated.
Turkey failed to qualify for the 2004 European Championship, but they returned in 2008 with their best performance at a Euro final tournament. Turkey finished second in their group behind Portugal and ahead of Czech Republic and Switzerland advancing to the knockout stage.
In the quarter final they played against Croatia, after the game finished 1-1, penalty shoot-out was needed to decide who will go in the semi-finals, turkey won 3-1. In the semi-final they faced Germany and lost after a spectacular game (3-2).
Turkey road to Euro 2016
Turkey was part of group A along with Iceland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Latvia. They finished third place four points ahead of fourth placed Netherlands. They accumulated 18 points winning five games, drawing three and losing two in their group.

The third place assured automatic qualification for Turkey to the final touranent held in France, as they turned out to be the best third placed team from the qualifiers.

Turkey will play against Croatia in the first round, the last times the two teams met were in the 2011 in the Euro 2012 qualifiers the first game finished 3-0 for Croatia and the second one was a 0-0 draw.
The second game will be against Spain. The last time the two teams met was in 2009 in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers Spain winning both games 1-0 and 2-1.
Their third game will be with Czech Republic, the two teams were in the same qualification group, the first game was won by Czech Republic 2-1 and the second one by Turkey 2-0.
