Euro 2016 - Hungary team profile

Hungary have qualified again to the European Championship after 44 years. In the group stage they will face Austria, Iceland and Portugal.

Brief History at the Euros

Hungary's first participation at the Euros was in back in 1964, in the qualifications they eliminated Wales, East Germany and France.
In the semi-final they were facing the home team Spain.

Spain opened the score sheet in the first half but Hungary equalized when there were only six minutes left from the game, sending the game into extra time. Spain scored again in the 112th minute and won 2-1.

Hungary played for the third place against Denmark. Hungarian scored first after just eleven minutes, but this time they were equalized just eight minutes before the 90 minutes. In the extra time Hungary scored two times in four minutes and the game finished 3-1 for them.

The only other time Hungary qualified for a final tournament of the European Championship was in 1972. In the qualifying round they finished first place in a group with Bulgaria, France and Norway, thus advancing to the play-offs, where they were facing their rivals Romania.

The first leg was in Hungary and the two teams draw 1-1. In the second leg the game ended with a 2-2 draw. As they "away goals" rule was not introduced yet, the two teams played a third game, which was won by the Hungarians 2-1.

Hungary faced the Soviet Union in the semi-final and they lost 0-1, Konkov scored the only goal of the game in the 53th minute. In the third place play-off Hungary played against the home side Belgium. Belgium won 2-1, after having also two goal advantage.

After 44 years Hungary qualified again to a European Championship, making them one of the biggest returns at the Euro 2016.

Hungary was part of group F along with Northern Ireland, Romania, Finland, Faroe Islands and Greece. They finished third place behind Northern Ireland and Romania. They finished with 16 points with four wins, four draws and 2 losses finishing 4 points behind of their rivals Romania.

The third place meant that Hungary advanced to the play-off where they had to face Norway for a place at the Euro 2016 group stage.

Hungary will play against Austria in the first round, the last time the two teams met was in 2006 in an international friendly and Hungary won 1-0.

The second game will be against Iceland. The last time the two teams met was in 2011 in an international friendly and the game finished 4-0 for Hungary.

Their third game will be with Portugal, the last times the two teams met was in the 2009 in the World Cup qualifiers and Portugal won both games 1-0 and 3-0.
