Argentina 0 - 0 Chile in the Copa America Centenario final in New York. Chile won the competition for the second time in a row, denying Argentina to equalize Uruguay's record after a penalty shootout (4-2).

It is the home of the New York Jets and New York Giants of the National Football League. The stadium opened as New Meadowlands Stadium in 2010.

The stadium's capacity is 82,566.

The teams

For the second time in a row the Copa America final features the same teams, Argentina and Chile. The 2015 final was won by Chile on penalties.

Argentina had the opportunity to make history by winning their 15th title and thus equalizing Uruguay's record.

Argentina won the Copa America in the following years: 1921, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1937, 1941, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1991, 1993. 23 years passed since Argentina won their last trophy.

Chile on the other hand have won the trophy the first time in 2015 although they have been runners-up two times, in 1955 and 1956.

The two teams have met 88 times in their history, Argentina having advantage over Chile, winning 59 games, 22 games finished with a draw only 7 games were won by Chile.

Argentina was part of the Group D, together with Chile, Panama and Bolivia finishing the group in first place with 9 points winning all three games.

Chile - road to the final

Chile was part of the Group D, together with Argentina, Panama and Bolivia finishing the group in second place with 6 points winning all three games.

Then in the knockout rounds they faced Mexico and Colombia before reaching the final. In the quarter-final Chile won against Mexico with an incredible 7-0 while in the semi-final they won 2-0 against Colombia.

Key Players

Obviously the most important players are Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez.
Leo Messi: even though he started the competition injured he managed to score 5 goals so far. He scored 3 goals against Panama coming in from the bench. Then he added one goal in the quarter-final against Venezuela and another magnificent goal (from free kick) against the USA in the semi-final.
Alexis Sanchez: he impressed in the last game of the group stage against Panama, when he scored two goals. He added another goal in the 7-0 win against Mexico.

The Final

Argentina First eleven: Romero; Rojo, Otamendi, Funes Mori, Mercado; Banega, Mascherano, Biglia; Messi, Higuain, Di Maria.

Chile First eleven: Bravo; Beausejour, Medel, Jara, Isla; Vidal, Aranguiz, Diaz; Fuenzalida, Sanchez, Vargas.

First half

From the beginning Chile has shown its trademark aggression, often winning the ball in the midfield and moving it forward as quickly as possible. Ever Banega fired a shot narrowly wide of Chile’s goal just 15 seconds into the game.

In the 17th minute Messi shot an ensuing free kick straight at Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Four minutes later Higuain took the ball off a Chile defender and raced in alone on the goal but his chip rolled wide.

In the 28th minute the referee Heber Lopes has shown Diaz a red card for a foul on Messi. Chile is down to 10 men after the harsh decision, but Argentina player Rojo also got dismissed 10 minutes later.

In the 55th minute Higuain had another opportunity but he shot over the bar. Then Mauricio Isla shoots wide in Chile’s first attempt at Argentina’s goal. In Copa America 2016, Chile has scored 10 of its 16 goals in the second half.

Chile was outplaying Argentina in the second half, they have shown more work rate off the ball and invention when in possession.

In the 73th minute Aguero hit a shot after Messi created danger on the dribble and set him up in good position. Messi has moved into a central position, and Argentina is benefiting from the shift.

In the 80th minute Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero made his first save of the night, denying Vargas’ shot from a tight angle.

In the 90th minute Mori made a heroic block, stopping Alexis’ tap-in from reaching the goal. Then immediately Messi shot powerfully wide after dribbling to the top of Chile’s penalty area.

Extra time

In the 99th minute Puch set up Vargas for his best scoring chance of the game, but the Chile striker headed it too closely to Romero, who saved the shot.

In the 100th minute Bravo made a fantastic save on Aguero’s glancing header. The Chile goalkeeper tipped Aguero’s header off the crossbar.

The extra-time was not enough to separate the two teams and Chile won 4-2 on penalties.
